S-8358B60UA-NRTT2U Application Field and Working Principle

S-8358B60UA-NRTT2U is a pulse-frequency modulation-type DC/DC switching controller of Toshiba Semiconductor Co. Ltd whose designs are from the Renesas Electronics Corporation. It is one of the PMIC--Voltage Regulators--DC DC Switching Controllers.

The S-8358B60UA-NRTT2U DC/DC switching controller ensures outstanding performance when the frequency of one or more inputs varies with the use of the active PFM control. It is mainly used for automotive and consumer applications. One of its typical applications is SW filter control of the audio power amplifier.

Structure

The S-8358B60UA-NRTT2U contains a PWM control circuit, a power supply monitoring circuit, a 100 kHz oscillator, an error amplifier, voltage comparators and a current sensing circuit and a buffer input circuit. All the key components are located on the package.

Working Principle

The PWM control circuit with feedback loop and the power supply monitoring circuit control the output voltage and the feedback voltage of the output.

In the S-8358B60UA-NRTT2U, two voltage comparators are used for the detection of the output voltage the power supply voltage of the system by the comparator 1 and of the feedback voltage from the Built-in oscillator switch by the comparator 2.

The voltage comparator 1 is connected to the output of the PWM control circuit, the power supply monitoring circuit, and the output voltage at the buffer input circuit and the output of the current sensing circuit. The voltage comparator 2 is connected to the output of the oscillator switch.

The oscillator switch is used for setting the frequency of oscillation of the output voltage, and the error amplifier and the voltage comparator 1 are connected to the output of the oscillator switch.

When the power supply voltage on the system is higher than the reference voltage on the buffer input circuit, the comparator 1 confirms that the output voltage from the PWM control circuit is lower than the reference voltage. Therefore, the power supply voltage to the load is increased. The comparator 2 detects whether the feedback voltage is lower than the reference voltage, and if it is, the power supply voltage to the load is decreased.

The current sensing circuit is used for controlling the duty cycle of the pulse-frequency modulation-type DC/DC switching controller, and it is connected to the output of the error amplifier. When the output voltage exceeds the reference voltage, the current sensing circuit detects the current and decreases the duty cycle. This causes the output voltage to decrease and the power supply voltage to the load to be regulated.
