PMIC or Power Management ICs are Integrated Circuits (ICs) which combine several electrical power management functions into a single integrated programmable chip. Voltage regulators, DC-DC switching controllers, power switches and supervisors are among the collection of critical building blocks included in a PMIC device.The S-8540B00FN-IMAT2G is a voltage regulator device within a PMIC product line which performs its operations under the control of a defined instruction set. It functions as a DC-DC switching controller. It provides power to the load by duty cycle-controlled switch operations and thus, serves to convert voltage levels from one form to another.The core features of this IC include an integrated converter control circuit to provide other system peripheral ICs with voltage conversion, an integrated logic circuit for control of the converter, an onboard power supply regulator that supports AC adapters, and an over-voltage protection (OVP) circuit.

The S-8540B00FN-IMAT2G is designed for use with low-cost systems in a variety of power supply applications. This IC is suited for portable PCs, tablet PCs, digital cameras, mobile phones, printers, LED lighting, and all other systems using an AC adapter as the main power source. It also finds extensive use in backup power supplies, emergency power supplies, peripheral power supplies, and embedded applications.

Working Principle

The S-8540B00FN-IMAT2G operates with the help of an external MOSFET in a synchronous rectification or buck converter circuit. This IC converts a DC input voltage (Vin) to a regulated, lower output voltage (Vout) with a high efficiency and low output ripple.The integrated converter control circuit of this IC controls the power transistor in order to control the output voltage and current. This control is executed through a PWM (pulse width modulation) with a built-in oscillator and synchronous rectification. This circuit is also responsible for controlling the overall operation of the buck converter.

The pulse width modulation of this IC is also employed to regulate the output current and control overshoot or undershoot conditions of the output voltage. The PWM period and duty cycle of this IC can be adjusted by changing the external resistor values, resulting in an adjustable and stable output voltage. By constantly comparing the output voltage to the reference voltage, the IC controls the peak current and voltage.

The S-8540B00FN-IMAT2G also features a built-in power supply regulator circuit which enables AC adapters to easily supply power to the IC and control the inrush current. The OVP circuit of this IC is designed as an extra safety feature which protects the connected device from excessive voltage, as well as short-circuit protection.
