With the development of semiconductor technology, single diodes (S1D) have become an essential part of power supplies. They are widely used for a variety of electrical engineering applications, such as rectifying circuits, switching circuits, safety circuits and loads in power supplies. S1D’s have a number of advantages over other diode types, such as cost, size and efficiency.
S1D can be roughly divided into two main types: Schottky diodes and Zener diodes. Schottky diodes are typically used to rectify alternating current by converting it into direct current. This is done by using the rectifying effect of the PN junction, when a voltage higher than the barrier voltage is applied across it. In this process, a small portion of the input signal is forced to pass through the diode, and the majority of the signal is blocked.
Zener diodes, on the other hand, are used for overvoltage protection. This is done by letting excessive current or voltage to dispel or "let go", thereby protecting the circuit from voltage spikes or surges. Zener diodes also serve as voltage references, and can be used in current-limiting circuits. Generally, the maximum power dissipation for a Zener diode should be kept to below 1W.
Regardless of the type, S1D diodes all share the same basic principle of operation. As previously mentioned, the actual operation heavily depends on the type of S1D and the applied voltage. For example, a Schottky diode operates by rectification when a voltage higher than the barrier voltage is applied, while a Zener diode operates by voltage-limiting based on the forward voltage drop.
Essentially, S1D diodes all have an anode, a cathode and a PN junction. As an electrical current is applied to the device, the anode will be positively charged (N-type material) while the cathode will be negatively charged (P-type material). When the applied voltage is above the barrier voltage, the PN junction will be forward biased and the current will be allowed to flow from the anode to the cathode. Once this voltage falls below the barrier voltage, the PN junction will be in reverse bias, thereby blocking the current from passing through.
S1D diodes are widely used in power supplies for rectification, overvoltage protection and voltage reference. Because of their low cost, small size and high efficiency, they are becoming increasingly popular for these applications and others. As semiconductor technology continues to advance, S1D diodes will become even more ubiquitous in the world of electronics.
