Working principle

The serial NOR type S25FL256SAGNFB003 operates in an SPI serial bus protocol and utilizes a multiplexed address and data bus structure. The device uses single or dual output signals allowing multiple devices to be cascaded on a single bus. The memory supports Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) modes 0, 1 and 2, which are compatible with all SPI bus speeds, from low frequency synchronous operations up to 66MHz.

The device functions include code protection, data protection, block erase, page programming, write protection, command programming and sector erase. The device has two instruction codes: one for read and one for write. The read instruction allows up to 256 bytes to be transferred in a single operation. The write instruction supports page programming of up to 256 bytes.

Once the instruction is written to the serial input port, the memory controller initiates the data transaction, reads the serial address and read/write data, sections the address into the 8-bit address (A7-A0). After that the memory controller initiates the appropriate logic to check the status register, address line and data line.

The internal functions of the memory device includes erase blocks, program pages, write protection, and command programming. When the memory is being used, the user has the choice to enable/disable the write protect pins. The write protect pins are used to make the memory write protect or write enable with a simple command.
