In the electronics industry, the silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) is widely used as a kind of power control device in various applications. Particularly in the industrial field, SCRs are widely utilized in the electroplating and galvanization processes, such as in the rolling mill annealing process. This technology provides an efficient, reliable, and economic way to adjust electrical current in high and medium power applications. However, in the past decade, with the development of semiconductor manufacturing technology, the standard SCRs have become less practical due to the emergence of SIAs, also known as Silicon-Controlled Anode-Turn-On Technology (S2A-TP), which have been designed to correct the drawbacks of the SCR.S2A-TP is a single-device, three-terminal, self-oscillating switch that offers unprecedented power handling capability, reduced EMI/RFI, and simplified drive circuitry. It is a self-oscillating, single-gate device that can operate up to voltage ratings of 600V and switch currents of 1,000A. S2A-TP is a hybrid device which combines the advantages of both traditional SCRs and MOSFETs, while eliminating their drawbacks.Specifically, S2A-TP has several advantages over traditional SCRs and MOSFETs. Firstly, it has a significantly lower turn-on voltage than an SCR, thereby allowing it to be switched on with a simple and low power gate drive circuit. Additionally, S2A-TP switch can be quickly turned on with a very low turn-on voltage, resulting in reduced power dissipation and improved power efficiency. Secondly, S2A-TP offers high switching frequencies, which allows for higher frequency operation and better control, eliminating the need for a complex circuit design. Thirdly, it has two built-in self-oscillating features, namely, Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) and self-biasing, which eliminates the need for an external gate drive, thereby saving costs and simplifying circuit design. Finally, S2A-TP has a higher energy efficiency of up to 95%, which significantly reduces energy consumption compared to traditional SCRs and MOSFETs.

The working principle of S2A-TP is based on two electrical components, the MOSFET and the SCR. The MOSFET is responsible for the switching action of the S2A-TP, while the SCR is responsible for sustaining the switch-on state, ensuring a high switching efficiency and performance. The MOSFET is connected in series with the SCR, and the positive and negative supply terminals of the SCR are connected to an electrical circuit that needs to be controlled. The control gate of the MOSFET is then driven by a gate pulse from an external controller. When the gate signal is applied, the MOSFET will be switched on, causing the SCR to rapidly turn OFF, enabling the current to flow through the load circuit. Once the gate signal is removed, the SCR turns ON and sustains the current flow through the load circuit. This mode of operation is referred to as Self-Oscillating Turn-On Switching (SOTS) and enables the S2A-TP to rapidly switch on and off at frequencies up to 400kHz.

Due to its high power handling capability, simple drive circuit and low turn-on voltage, as well as its high power efficiency, S2A-TP has found widespread applications in many fields, such as automotive switching products, lighting, power supplies and motor drives. In the automotive field, S2A-TP can be used in the switching systems of cars for controlling the current flow to different systems and components, such as cooling fans, ignition systems, and alternators. In lighting, S2A-TP can be used to control medium and high power LED lights, ensuring a uniform current distribution and improved performance. In power supplies, S2A-TP can be used to control the output current of the power supplies, ensuring a constant voltage regulation throughout the working range. Lastly, in motor drives, S2A-TP can be used to ensure a smooth control of the motor, preventing sudden jerks and load variations.Overall, with its high power handling capability, low turn-on voltage, and self-oscillating features, S2A-TP offers an effective solution for higher efficiency and power control in various high-power applications.
