Reed Relays

Reed relays are electromechanical switches triggered by an applied voltage. They are composed of a set of contacts, an electromagnet, and a spring to reset the contacts after the magnet has been triggered. S8-0504V application field and working principle

The S8-0504V Reed Relay from Omron is an extremely compact, low-power, low-voltage version of the reed relay. Ideal for controlling small loads in a range of consumer products and industrial applications, this unit offers low power consumption and a low operating voltage. The S8-0504V can switch loads up to 0.6A and operate in temperatures up to 80°C. It features a low-current, low-voltage operation, which makes it suitable for battery applications. Furthermore, the relay also features a long life span of up to 1,000,000 operations with a low-voltage operation up to 250VAC.

The S8-0504V Reed Relay from Omron works by having an electromagnet, placed in between two poles of the contact, which attracts or repels the contact off and on. When an alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) is applied to the electromagnet, it creates a magnetic field that attracts the contact. This attraction either closes or opens the contacts depending on the state of the coil when the current was applied. If the contacts were closed when the current was applied and the current was a positive or negative value, then the contacts will open. Conversely, if the contacts were open when the current was applied and the current was a positive or negative value, then the contacts will close. Once the current is removed, the magnet’s field weakens and the contacts reset to their original state.
