When a positive or negative transient voltage is applied across the diode, the voltage builds up across the PN junction. When the current passes the breakdown voltage, the PN junction is switched on resulting in an increase in the current and decrease in the voltage across the junction. In this situation, the voltage is clamped down. As the current flows through the diode, it heats up due to the Joule heating and thus it dissipates the additional energy that is beyond its breakdown voltage.
