A transient voltage suppressor diode, or simply a TVS diode, is a type of diode designed specifically for applications requiring transient voltage protection. An example of such applications may include the protection of sensitive circuit components like computer systems, consumer electronics, and industrial automation equipment. A TVS diode typically consists of a semiconductor junction formed between an n-type layer and a p-type layer, with a variety of other materials including tin, zirconium, and silicon. The purpose of the TVS diode is to provide protection from a sudden surge of voltage, such as from lightning or inductive load switching, which can destroy sensitive components. Because of its ability to absorb a high amount of power, a TVS diode makes an ideal choice for applications requiring transient protection.
One such example of a TVS diode is the SA15CA, which is designed for applications where overvoltage protection is required. The SA15CA utilizes a Zener-based breaking mechanism to provide protection from transient voltage surges. In essence, the SA15CA acts as a Zener diode, but with a much higher clamp current and voltage breakdown capability. In addition, the SA15CA is able to absorb a much larger amount of energy than a Zener diode, by employing a special reverse breakdown mechanism that is triggered when an excessive voltage is applied.
The SA15CA\'s protection mechanism operates in two stages: first, it will limit the maximum peak voltage of the surge event; second, it will limit the peak energy of the surge event. The first stage occurs as soon as the voltage reaches the breakdown voltage of the diode, and the second stage occurs when the energy of the surge exceeds the power absorption capability of the device. Generally, the SA15CA has a peak clamping voltage of 26V and can take up to 8.5J of power in a single surge event. The device is able to operate in a wide temperature range from -40°C to +85°C.
The SA15CA is designed to be mounted on a circuit board, with the active portion of the diode facing towards the ground plane. The device requires a minimum insulation of 4mm to the ground plane for proper operation, but due to its small size it can easily be mounted on any circuit board. Additionally, the device comes with a solderable connection on the cathode side for easy connection to the board.
