Application Fields

Working Principle

At its core, the SC02S1212A is a buck-boost (step-up, step-down) DC-DC converter that is able to both step-up and step-down an input voltage. It employs a standard Buck-Boost circuitry for voltage conversion: two inductive elements, two diodes, and one MOSFET, connected in the fashion of a buck-boost converter. This converts any unregulated input voltage from 7V to 21V to an adjustable output voltage ranging from 2V to 20V.

When input voltage is higher than the output voltage, the converter begins to function as a Buck converter (or step-down converter) and it uses a pair of serially connected inductors (IC L1 and L2) to store energy during the on-time of the MOSFET (Q1). During this time, the diodes D1 and D2 get reversed biased and the MOSFET (Q1) acts as a switch by allowing the current to flow through its drain source path. The already stored energy energizes the output capacitor (C1) to give the desired output voltage.

In the opposite case, when the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, the same circuit become a Boost converter (step-up converter). In this case, After the MOSFET is OFF, the first inductor (L1) is energized and the other inductor (L2) will energize the output capacitor (C1) to give the required output voltage.

In addition to the two primary switching elements, SC02S1212A also includes a third element that helps control the conversion process: a low-voltage buck control IC that controls the switching of two primary elements – the MOSFET and the diode. This IC ensures the accurate transfer of power from the input to the output of the converter and also provides a wide output voltage adjustability.
