UARTs (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) are communication interface devices used for the serial transmission of data. The SC16C554BIBS and SC16C551 are two of the most popular versions of UART. The two devices have a number of differences, as described below.
Application Field
The SC16C554BIBS is primarily used in applications where a high-speed data rate is required, such as medical imaging and broadband networks. Features
The SC16C554BIBS is a low-power, low-cost UART with an integrated 16-bit FIFO buffer. This device is suitable for point-to-point and multi-point applications, and supports up to 11 Mbps data rate. It also provides reconfigurable baud rate detection, and supports high-speed auto-negotiation with an external device. The SC16C551 is an 8/32-bit configurable UART with a 2 KB FIFO buffer. In addition to the standard UART function, this device offers an extended serial port, configurable data rate, and hardware handshake. It also supports 9-bit resolution and is FCC and EN55-compliant.
Working Principle
Both the SC16C554BIBS and SC16C551 use the traditional UART communication principle - the data to be transmitted is broken down into 8-bit words, and each bit is sent separately. The difference between the two devices lies in the implementation and the number of bits used. The SC16C554BIBS transmits data in 16-bit words, while the SC16C551 uses an 8/32 bit configuration. The data bits are sent from one UART to the other in a full-duplex arrangement - with both UARTs transmitting simultaneously.
Once the data has been sent, the receiving UART reassembles the bits into bytes and then processes them. The data is then sent to the appropriate device, depending on the type of data being transmitted. In the case of the SC16C554BIBS, the data is processed in blocks of 16 bits and transmitted at a rate of 11 Mbps. The SC16C551, on the other hand, processes data in 8 or 32-bit blocks and transmits it at a rate of up to 4 Mbps.
In a UART communication system, the sending and receiving UARTs are both connected to one another via a transmission line. In order to ensure the integrity of the data, a number of error-detection and correction mechanisms are employed. The two devices also support hardware flow control and enable data transfer through hardware handshaking. This provides a low-latency, low-power method of communication, making them ideal for applications such as medical imaging and automotive systems.
