Temperature Sensors - NTC Thermistors and the SC50Y103V

Temperature sensors are devices used to measure temperature in a variety of applications. Most temperature sensors use either analog or digital systems, depending on the needs of the application and user. Among the various types of digital temperature sensors, the NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor is a common choice. Inside the material itself, micro cuts, or “tunnelling”, are made into the material to create concentrations of electrical charge that generate a weak electrical current. As the temperature changes, these currents change and, consequently, the resistance of the thermistor changes as well.The SC50Y103V is a NTC thermistor device, specifically designed for automotive applications. It’s disk-shaped casing is made of a proprietary blend of materials that makes it resistant to heat and humidity, ensuring a long-term, reliable performance. The sensing element is made of a metal-oxide-based material that provides good thermal conductivity qualities and ensures a wide sensing range. Its resistance depends on the temperature, with a resistance of 50kΩ at 25°C and 800kΩ at -10°C.The SC50Y103V comes with an integrated thermistor circuit that helps to speed up the temperature measurement process. The integrated circuit designed into the thermistor increases the signal-to-noise ratio, reduces jitter, and also eliminates the need for manual adjustment during installation. The integrated circuit also provides a built-in temperature temperature compensation circuit to ensure the precision of the temperature sensors over the wide range of temperatures.
