Fixed Inductors
Inductors are components used to store energy in the form of a magnetic field. They are usually connected in series with a capacitor in an oscillatory circuit to produce alternating current, or AC. Fixed inductors, which are also referred to as windings or coils, consist of a conductive material, such as copper wire, which is wound and wrapped around a core or bobbin. This configuration is used to generate a magnetic field of a specified frequency and amplitutde, in order for the device to perform its intended purpose.One example of a fixed inductor is the SC53-100, a product made by Coil Craft. The SC53-100 is a common-mode choke that can be used to provide signal line noise suppression in high-speed applications, including Ethernet, USB, firewire, and other systems for data transfer and power distribution. It is composed of two separate windings, each with two discrete cores to provide inductance for each winding.
SC53-100 Application Field and Working Principle
The SC53-100 is an ideal choice for industrial control and robotics applications that require immunity from high levels of electromagnetic interference (EMI). Typically, each winding of the SC53-100 contains two cores, which are moulded in one piece, with a ferrite magnetic material. the windings use a pair of interfacing magnetic fields to establish a link between the two cores, and thereby the two coupled windings, which allows them to filter out the unwanted EMI noise. This makes the device extremely versatile in terms of application.
In order to maximise the effectiveness of the SC53-100, Coil Craft suggests a few design parameters that should be taken into consideration by users. Firstly, the device should be placed close to the source of the interference, and be oriented as needed to minimise any distracting noise. Furthermore, the product should not be connected to a ground plane that is not connected to components elsewhere in the circuitry. This allows it to provide an optimised signal-to-noise ratio. When using the SC53-100 for EMI suppression, Coil Craft also recommends mounting the device as close as possible to both the power and signal lines.
