Inertial Measurement Units, or IMUs, are small sensors commonly used in motion systems. One such motion sensor is the SCC1300-D04-6, an IMU developed primarily for navigation and motion-sensing applications in aircraft and unmanned vehicles. This IMU combines a gyroscope, which measures angular rate, and accelerometer, which measures linear acceleration, into one compact unit. This not only reduces overall size and power consumption, but it also increases reliability and accuracy in the motion measurements.

At the heart of the SCC1300-D04-6 is a MEMS gyroscope that provides measurements of angular rate and provides drift correction for improved accuracy in short-term measurements. The accelerometer inside the IMU measures linear acceleration from both gravity, which provides the direction of the gravity vector, and true motion acceleration which reflects changes in velocity and therefore position.
