SCN-1558SC is a highly popular interface IC (integrated circuit) used in a variety of data transmission and control applications. It is often referred to as a “Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter" (USART).
The SCN-1558SC is primarily used in asynchronous serial communication and is configured with three modes of operation. These include "UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter)," "Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI)," and "I2C (Integrated Inter-Chip Communications)."
In the UART mode, the SCN-1558SC functions as an asynchronous receiver/transmitter, which receives and transmits data in parallel or byte-size serial format. It allows for the configuration of the data communication to be set or even changed on the fly. By programming the internal registers of the chip, the operating parameters such as baud rate, word-length, parity, and number of stop bits can be specified. In this mode, it also features a programmable FIFO (first-in-first-out) buffer, which allows for the delivery of larger amounts of data or messages with a higher throughput rate.
The SSI mode on the SCN-1558SC enables it to carry out bit-wise serial communication, allowing for data to be transmitted and received in a continuous bit-stream. This bitstream is usually accompanied by both a clock signal and a control signal that indicate the start and end of a data word. In this mode, data can be transmitted and received at rates ranging from 115.2 kbps up to 3.2 Mbps, depending on the application.
The final mode of operation, I2C, facilitates communication between multiple devices, allowing for the sending and receiving of data, as well as power and ground signals to connect the devices to one another. The data is sent along a two-wire bus which includes a clock signal and a data signal. The clock signal is generated by a master device while the data signal is controlled by both the master and the slave devices.
Thanks to its features, the versatile SCN-1558SC interface IC has become a commonplace choice among many control and data transmission applications. It is particularly favored for its numerous configuration options, making it suitable to various communication needs.
