Fixed Inductors

A fixed inductor is a type of electrical component used in electronic circuits to store energy in the form of an electromagnetic field and resist changes in current. Fixed inductors are also known as self-inductors or just “coils.” Inductors are available in many different sizes, shapes, and values of inductance to suit various applications.

Fixed inductors are used in many types of electronic and electrical circuits, such as oscillators, filters, signal conditioning circuits, power supplies, and RF communication circuits. For these applications, the inductance of the inductor must remain constant over a specified range of frequencies, temperature, and other environmental factors. To ensure that, fixed inductors are typically constructed from wire wound on a core material or inside a ferrite shell.

SCRH127-3R5 application field and working principle

SCRH127-3R5 is a series of fixed inductors manufactured by Epcos. The device features a high rated DC current capacity of 1.7 Amps and a ± 30% inductance tolerance.

The SCRH127-3R5 is suitable for general purpose filtering, decoupling, pulse transformers, and switching applications. The device’s high value inductance makes it suitable for use in Power-over-Ethernet (POE) and PoE+ applications. The device has also been tested to operate in an EMI environment up to 55dB, making it suitable for high-speed communication systems.

The SCRH127-3R5 consists of two 7mm square core inductors wound with two or three layers of magnetically shielded enameled wire. The inductor is then encapsulated in a UL94V-0 compliant, black thermoplastic housing for protection against abrasions and harsh environments. The device has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.

The SCRH127-3R5 operates on the principle of Faraday’s law of induction. According to this law, when a conductor is placed in a changing magnetic field, the resulting electromotive force (EMF) induces a current in the conductor. This induces a magnetic field around the conductor, which in turn induces a current in the conductor, thus completing the cycle.

The inductance of a fixed inductor is determined by the number of turns on the inductor and the core material used. The SCRH127-3R5 provides an inductance of 7.4uH, which helps attenuate frequency fluctuations in high-speed communication systems. The self-inductance of the device helps reduce electromagnetic interference levels, while the wire shield and thermoplastic housing provide protection against harsh environmental conditions.
