Pushbutton switches serve as a control mechanism for switching from one setting to another. While there are a variety of pushbutton switches available, the general working principle and the application field can be broadly categorized according to the type of switch.

Single Pole-Single Throw (SPST): This type of switch usually has a single pushbutton that make or break a single-pole connection serving as an on/off switch. Often used in domestic equipment or small appliances, it controls the flow of current to a device and allows the user to switch the circuit off or on. The application fields include computerized control, lighting and fan operations, door and window openers, domestic appliances and many more.

Single Pole-Double Throw (SPDT): The SPDT pushbutton switch is similar to the SPST switch in that it contains one pole to control the flow of current. However, it has two throws, one for the contact and another for the auxiliary contact. This type of switch is able to control two different appliances such as audio selectors, toggle switches and similar equipment where two circuits need to be switched on and off independently. The application fields include toggle switches, relay switches, audio selectors, amplifier switches and many more.

Double Pole-Double Throw (DPDT): The DPDT switch contains two poles as well as two throws. It is typically used to control two independent circuits. This type of switch is most commonly used in stereos and amplifiers, where separate left and right audio channels need to be switched on and off independently. The application fields include multiple and multi-level switches, power controllers, stereo equipment, amplifiers, and many more.

Multi-pole Switches: These switches have more than two poles and can control multiple independent circuits. They are commonly used in heavy-duty machinery, industrial control systems and other systems requiring multiple switching functions. Due to their versatility, these switches are used in a wide range of applications from car audio systems to industrial control systems, process control equipment and many more.

Working Principle: Pushbutton switches all operate on the same basic principle: a contact is opened and closed using an actuator. The actuator is typically a button, lever, or rocker, and consists of a fulcrum around which it pivots when the user pushes or pulls it. When the switch is closed, current flows through the control circuit, which can then be used to control the application. When it is open, the flow of electricity is interrupted, deactivating the equipment.
