Surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters are an important member of the filter family, and SF1184B-1 is one of the commonly used SAW filters. It is a passive electronic component, mainly used in RF communication systems for intermediate frequency and low loss band pass.

SF1184B-1 is a ceramic slab-type SAW filter made of AT-cut quartz substrate. The fundamental working principle of SAW filters is the conversion of electrical signals into acoustic waves and the conversion of acoustic waves into electrical signals. The excited acoustic waves propagate longitudinally on the surface of the crystal and induce resonance. Under the action of different kinds of high frequency forces, such as stop band offset and filter pass band, the resonant reflection characteristics of acoustic waves in the longitudinal direction are used to obtain the selectivity of electrical signals.

The major components of SF1184B-1 are quartz substrate, two sets of interdigital transducers (IDT), two sets of reflecting electrodes that form a cavity, and external terminals. The substrate provides a propagation medium for surface waves, while IDT provides the left & right surface waves. The two sets of reflecting electrodes consists of two layers of metal running parallel to each other. The electrode can reflect surface waves from the left to the right, and form a resonant filter cavity. When signals are propagating through this cavity, the signals that fall outside the pass band will be dissipated, thus selecting signals within the pass band.

The external terminals of SF1184B-1 are connected to the IDT of the filter and can be connected to external circuits. When it works with other components in the system, SF1184B-1 can select electrical signals within specified band while dissipating signals outside that band, thus enabling a high performance contract in the specified communication channel.
