The SF2-EH16-N is a Photointerrupter Slot type device with a logic output. This device uses a transmitter and a receiver which are mounted opposite to each other and form an opto-electronic slot. When an object passes through the slot, the beam of light from the emitter to the receiver is broken and the output is switched from high or low logic level. This type of device is specifically suitable for counting passing objects.

Principle of Operation

When no object is in the slot, the infrared emitter (infrared light emitting diode) and receiver (photo-transistor) are positioned opposite each other, forming an opto-electronic slot. The emitted light is focused on the receiver’s photodiode and is detected by the photo-transistor. The generated current creates a voltage level between the collector and the emitter of the photo-transistor, which results in a defined output voltage level (high logic level). When an object breaks the beam of the light between the emitter and receiver, the output voltage level drops to a state of low logic level.
