Optoisolators are an essential component in any electronics system, providing isolation between logic circuits. The SFH6720T optoisolator is a logic output type, with excellent performance characteristics making it suitable for a wide range of applications.

The SFH6720T consists of a gallium and arsenide infrared light emitting diode optically coupled to a high-gain transistor optical coupler. The optoisolator can be operated from a 3.0 to 5.5 Volt power supply and the input/output logic levels can be adapted to suit the needs of the particular application. The maximum power dissipation is 650mW; the on-state current at VCE = 1V, and the transistor collectorI emitter voltage (Vce) at 1mA is 460mV. The propagation delay is typically 10ns from an input of 0.8V to an output of 2.4V.

The SFH6720T optoisolator has a variety of applications, from isolated logic, to low voltage AC/DC and high-speed pulse conditioning and transmission. In isolated logic applications, the optoisolator can be used in place of a standard logic gate to isolate input signals from output logic circuits, reducing the possibility of ground loops, and providing protection from dangerous high energy signals.

In AC/DC applications, the optoisolator can be used to provide a noise-resistant gate between the AC line and a logic circuit. This eliminates ground loops, and keeps the noise caused by transients and switching on the line from affecting the logic circuit. In high-speed pulse conditioning applications, the optoisolator can be used to isolate a logic circuit from an RF signal, which prevents the RF signal from corrupting the data on the logic bus. Finally, in data transmission applications, the optoisolator can be used to separate two different voltage levels, allowing a signal to travel through a long distance without degradation.

The working principle of the SFH6720T is fairly straightforward. When an input signal is applied to the input anode of the LED, the LED emits infrared light, which is picked up by the phototransistor. The phototransistor amplifies the signal, and output is then taken from collector of the phototransistor. As the LED and phototransistor are electrically isolated from each other, the device offers excellent noise immunity and protection against overvoltage conditions.
