Inrush current limiting (ICL) refers to the active management of the current that surges into an electrical power system when it is first switched on, connected to the power grid, or came into contact with automated process control equipment. The SG44 range is the latest generation of ICLs from Sensitron. In this article, we will explore the application fields and working principles of the SG44.

Application Field of SG44 Inrush Current Limiters

The SG44 inrush current limiters can be used in diverse applications, such as providing surge protection for industrial and commercial electronics, power supply systems, telecom and IT equipment, energy storage, home appliances, and more. They are also highly suitable for use in medical equipment, aviation, and automotive industries. The wide range of ICLs from Sensitron, including the SG44, provide ICLs from 0.1A to 200A for currents up to 80V.

In addition, the SG44 inrush current limiters can be used in combination with fuse-clips, printed circuit board, and other protective components, and they offer optimized performance and long-term reliability. This allows customers to further improve their system operation and reduce their overall costs.

Working Principle of SG44 Inrush Current Limiters

The working principle of SG44 inrush current limiters is based on the NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient thermistor)/ metal oxide varistor (MOV)/metal oxide resistor (MOR)/ relay principle. NTC thermistors, which work by reducing current flow as heat is produced by the current, are the first components to react in the working principle of SG44 inrush current limiters. NTC thermistors possess a negative coefficient of resistance which means that as the temperature increases the resistance increases. As the load is first switched on, a high current is drawn from the power source. The NTC thermistor senses the current surge and generates heat due to resistance, thereby reducing the current to a predefined safe limit.

The metal oxide varistor (MOV) and metal oxide resistor (MOR) are then used to further ensure safety, as they divert additional excessive current to the ground. The MOV is a non-linear shunt device made of zinc-oxide, and its resistance decreases with an increase in voltage. The MOV is activated and it subsequently redirects excessive current surges to ground, whereas the MOR is a resistive element with temperature-dependent characteristics.

The last elements to form part of the SG44 inrush current limiters working principle are the relay contact switch and the differential amplifier. As the NTC, MOV and MOR divert extra currents to the ground, the relay contact switch opens and prevents further current surge. The contacts of the relay switch act as an isolator and disconnect the power supply. The differential amplifier then senses the voltage between the circuit voltage and power supply, and if it exceeds a certain threshold, it generates a signal to close the relay switch and thus allow more current to flow.

Conclusion

SG44 inrush current limiters from Sensitron are highly reliable and offer optimized performance. They are suitable for use in a variety of applications and industries, such as industrial and commercial electronics, power supply systems, telecom and IT equipment, energy storage, home appliances, and medical equipment. The working principle of SG44 inrush current limiters is based on the NTC thermistor/MOV/MOR/relay principle, which works together to ensure stability and safety.
