As more and more mobile terminals and radio communication networks are used in our daily lives, RF Evaluation and Development Kits, Boards provide a comprehensive evaluation and development tool for radio communication engineers. SI2151-A-EVB is one of these development kits which provided by Silicon Laboratories. It is an evaluation platform gives radio communication engineers powerful capability to evaluate the features and performance of the SI2151 tuner, a low power, digital broadband receiver of the 2.3-2.7GHz frequency range.
The SI2151-A-EVB application provides the comprehensive features and capabilities include low power consumption, high input level performance and the wide frequency range from 2.3-2.7GHz. The board directly accepts the radio-frequency (RF) signals from LNAs, up and down-converters and various RF modules. The SI2151-A-EVB provides a very flexible platform for the developers to direct evaluate the performance of the SI2151 with various RF modules.The SI2151-A-EVB is equipped with an ARM Cortex-M3 processor for the implementation of the comprehensive real-time algorithmic functions. The eval board has two SMA connectors which are used for receiving and transmitting analog RF signals. Another two SMA connectors are used for the reference path required for the internal calibration of the SI2151. In addition, there are four LEDs on the board which indicates the power, lock, valid and data, as well as an on-board multi-segment antenna switch which is used to switch between the signal from the SMA connectors to the antenna.
The working principle of the SI2151-A-EVB is simple. The system takes the RF signal from a combination of modules. This signal is then amplified, filtered and conditioned by dedicated circuits on board. The conditioned signal is then fed to the part of the hardware the SI2151 which is responsible for determining the center frequency, gain and bandwidth of the signal. The data from the SI2151 is transferred to the software algorithms through the ARM Cortex-M3 processor. Here, it is processed and used to calculate the various parameters that are needed for the evaluation of the performance. The end result of the evaluation is then published in the debug window of the software.
In addition to the evaluation capabilities, the SI2151-A-EVB also provides the designers the ability to modify the signal parameters in different ways. These parameters can then be applied to the signal and used to test the effect of various parameter settings. The SI2151-A-EVB also provides support for custom algorithms through the software. This allows the user to add their own custom algorithms to the platform for tailored evaluations.
The SI2151-A-EVB is a powerful tool in the hands of radio communication engineers to research, develop and test various radio communication systems. With the help of this board, the engineers can easily modify and evaluate the design of different communication systems which utilize the SI2151. The SI2151-A-EVB provides the engineers a comprehensive evaluation and development environment to test the performance of the designed communication system and make necessary changes and improvements before implementation.
