The SI5338K-A-GM is a member of the ClockBuilder Pro family of jitter-attenuating clock synthesizers. It is a GPS disciplined, broad-spectrum clock generator designed for a wide range of military, aerospace, and commercial applications. The device combines an ultra-low phase jitter sound-card oscillator with a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) to generate an extremely accurate and low-jitter reference clock. This device is ideal for applications that require a very low phase noise clock signal.

The SI5338K-A-GM can be used in a variety of applications, including military and aerospace systems, telecommunications, broadcast equipment, test and measurement equipment, and medical electronics. It is also suitable for use in high-speed digital electronic systems, high-end GPS systems, digital signal processor (DSP) devices, smart grid systems, and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).

The operating principle of the SI5338K-A-GM is based on the combination of an ultra-low phase jitter sound-card oscillator and a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO). The sound-card oscillator uses a MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) crystal and a special circuit to generate a reference clock signal with very low phase jitter. This signal is then amplified and divided by a divider circuit to generate the desired output frequency. The VCXO is driven by an on-chip voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) which is regulated by an internal GPS disciplined oscillator (GPSDO) to further minimize jitter. The VCO is further regulated by an on-chip temperature compensated voltage controlled oscillator (TCVCO).

The SI5338K-A-GM has excellent jitter performance. The sound-card oscillator has very low phase jitter, typically less than 10 femtoseconds (10 fs) RMS in the 1 Hz to 20 MHz band. The VCO has a typical loop jitter of less than 1 ps RMS and a typical open-loop jitter of less than 100 fs RMS. The GPSDO also helps minimize jitter and minimize the part-to-part variations. The combined jitter of the device is typically less than 10 fs RMS.

The SI5338K-A-GM is a very accurate device with a typical accuracy of better than 0.3 ppm RMS. This level of accuracy allows for accurate clock synchronisation and makes it ideal for highly sensitive applications. The device is also very robust and vibration tolerant, with a shock limit of 200 g.
