The SI5338N-B04890-GM is an application-specific clock chip or frequency generator that employs an advanced digital and fast phase-locked loop (DPLL) to offer frequency synthesizing features and integrated phase-noise calibration. This integrated clock circuit is part of a high-performance system-level clocking solution that provides exceptional clock accuracy needed in telecom and high-speed networking applications.

The SI5338N-B04890-GM combines an output that is capable of generating differential and single-ended clock signals with the addition of programmable levels and output frequency up to 950MHz with an input reference adjustable over a wide range. Due to its quick output frequency change with minimal jitter, the clock chip is designed for applications requiring multiple output frequencies (Fract-N synthesis mode) such as telecommunications and multicarrier/wideband data transmission.

The SI5338N-B04890-GM provides an integrated Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) to generate output clock signals with a selectable 0.111-10 MHz update rate. The integrated reference clock is a high-performance reference clock used in digital systems that typically operate in the 5 MHz to 45 MHz range. Multiple on-chip features, such as spread spectrum modulation, frequency offset tuning and digital calibration, ensure that the output signal maintains high accuracy and performance.

The device also features many options to ensure that its output clock is exactly the right type and frequency for the specific application being implemented. Output frequencies are easily programmed to up to 950MHz using a 7bit register or an external control interface. The phase jitter of the SI5338N-B04890-GM is also adjustable from 0.1 ps rms to 1 ps rms. The SI5338N-B04890-GM is capable of supporting up to 8 output frequencies, with each frequency adjustable over the frequency range of 261.2MHz to 950MHz.

The SI5338N-B04890-GM operates at supply voltages of 3.3V, with a maximum power consumption of 3.3mW. In addition to its low-voltage and low-power operation, the device has a wide 0°C to +70°C operating temperature range and the option of an on-chip temperature sensor to monitor the devices’ temperature.

The SI5338N-B04890-GM utilizes the digital Phase Locked Loop (PLL) core architecture to combine the functionality of a regular digital PLL, along with a clock-synthesis system. It has a digital loop filter, reference clock, voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), and output programming features. The on-chip VCO is capable of generating any frequency between 261.2MHz and 950MHz using a 7-bit divider and pre-programmed internal multiplier and divider. In addition, the PLL core also contains clock-synthesizing features to facilitate frequency hopping, dividing and multiplication, and multiple-output operation.

The SI5338N-B04890-GM provides the flexibility to allow external components, such as a loop filter and output buffers, to be added. This implementation allows the device to be used for fixed or adjustable output frequencies, multiple outputs, cascaded/seamless frequency hopping, as well as frequency calculations. In addition to flexibility, the device offers exceptional jitter performance and low-noise output. The SI5338N-B04890-GM is a low-cost, silicon optimized device that is suitable for applications requiring multiple outputs, fast frequency tuning, and tight jitter performance.
