The SI5340A-D-GMR is a general-purpose, ultra-low jitter clock generator optimized for network-clock applications. It is part of Silicon Labs’ Ultra Low Jitter Clock Generator family, renowned for providing the industry’s best combination of cycle-to-cycle jitter performance, number of outputs, flexibility, and power consumption in a single device.
The frequency range of the SI5340A-D-GMR flexible clock generator is from 150 kHz up to 5 GHz and it supports up to eleven independent differential outputs (each output pair can be enabled/disabled individually). It also offers a wide selection of output frequencies (from 50 to 800 MHz) and has an integrated voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) that provides best-in-class jitter guarantees.
The SI5340A-D-GMR provides very flexible clock distributions with best-in-class jitter performance. It offers easy configuration through an extensive range of registers and via low pin-count buses. It supports a wide range of external crystal frequencies, selectable prerequisites, bypass inputs, and extensive customer testability.

Working Principle
The SI5340A-D-GMR is based on Silicon Labs’ proprietary Generalized Multi-band (GMR) architecture. It combines four core technologies with a particular emphasis on jitter performance. GMR technology is capable of generating low jitter clocks with a single crystal even when multiple frequencies are used. The GMR synthesizer core uses a patented technique based on parametric modulation to generate each output frequency. Parametric Modulation is based on a combination of digital phase error correction and analog frequency modulation. This technique allows the clocking system to split frequency error into two components. The first component is phase error, which is corrected with digital phase calibration and therefore no phase noise is created. Second component of frequency error is frequency error, which is corrected with analog frequency modulation. This allows the system to achieve a very high level of jitter reduction compared to traditional synthesizer topologies.
Additional features of the SI5340A-D-GMR include an integrated 1.8V regulator and a power-off detector. Power-off detection allows the clock generator to cleanly transition to a standby mode when the power is removed or lost. The integrated 1.8V regulator allows the device to operate from a wide range of supply voltages, making it suitable for a variety of applications and environments.
