Programmable oscillators have been around for decades, providing a great way to generate complex waveforms and frequency-controlled signals. The most popular and widely used programmable oscillator is the SIT1602BCE7-28E. A built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is used to set the reference oscillator frequency. The reference and the second oscillator frequencies are then locked together and adjusted by a digital tuning word that is written to the tuning register. The external circuitry connected to the device will then adjust the frequency of the second oscillator to match the reference oscillator, thereby creating a continuously adjustable frequency signal.

The device also provides a variety of output signal formats, including traditional square waves, as well as sawtooth, sinusoidal and triangular wave forms.
