Among them is the SLE 55R04 MCC2, a medium-density smart card microcontroller chip. Features
The SLE 55R04 MCC2 is a single-chip smart card controller based on the UICC architecture for ISO7816-4 and ISO14443-4 communication standards. It provides a variety of features, including:
- 256 bytes of EEPROM memory with 48 bytes of user-writeable Non-Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM);
- 4 interrupts with 8 priority levels;
- 128 bytes of RAM;
- Integrated hardware-based DES, RSA, SHA and MD5 cryptographic algorithms;
- Integrated hardware EV1 authentication algorithm;
- Support for multiple card platforms, including GSM, CDMA, Multimedia Card (MMC), and others;
- Support for dedicated applications like PKI and CRT Revocation List processing;
- 1,024-bit program code memory;
- Power management functions and Sleep mode;
- 8-bit and 16-bit address buses for read/write operations.
Working Principle
The SLE 55R04 MCC2 is a UICC-architecture smart card controller that makes use of a dedicated micro-controller core that executes the instruction set needed to perform smart card applications. At the lowest hardware level, the card hardware performs information processing using I/O ports to access memory and control registers. Furthermore, the hardware includes system reset/clock units, memory and I/O protection, as well as interrupt controllers. At the upper hardware level, the card provides an embedded application-specific network processor with several 16/32 bit registers, an instruction queue, and program counter and direct memory access.
At the software level, the card contains the necessary protocols and application-specific software to allow communication with the base station. These protocols generally include the protocol for the card, the system layer protocol for the card, and the link layer protocol for the card. Finally, the card is programmed with the application firmware and drivers that are needed to appropriately communicate with the base station, process commands, and respond accordingly.
Applications
The SLE 55R04 MCC2 is ideal for use in secure identity and access control, banking, loyalty and prepaid payment cards, retail cards and other secure transaction applications. The chip is also well suited for other applications that involve data transmission and authentication such as PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) and CRT (Certified Public Trust) revocation list processing. As a feature-rich low-cost smart card chip that comes in a small 8-pin package, it is a reliable and cost-effective choice for a variety of smart card applications.
