SMA5J16C-E3/61 is a TVS diode designed for ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection, surge pulse and secondary lightning surge protection applications. It has a 5.0A surge current capability, a high peak power dissipation of up to 1100W, and a very fast response time, making it an ideal solution for many different types of protection applications.

SMA5J16C-E3/61 is an unidirectional device that is designed to offer both ESD and surge protection for high-speed signal lines in consumer, industrial, and automotive applications. In addition, it can be used for lightning-induced power and communication lines in harsh environments. This versatile TVS diode is available in a variety of packages including SMB, Axial, and SOD-123 to facilitate easy PCB mounting and meet the needs of diverse applications.
Working Principle
The SMA5J16C-E3/61 is an ESD/surge protector designed to provide fast response and high power handling capability. Its intrinsic avalanche characteristics enable to function as a conductor with a varying response according to the magnitude of the overvoltage. When the voltage applied to the diode exceeds its breakdown voltage, avalanche breakdown occurs and electric current starts to increase exponentially. At the same time, the diode starts to limit the current limiting to a safe level.
When the voltage and current returns to the normal level, the diode gradually deactivates. Because of its low capacitance and low leakage current, SMA5J16C-E3/61 will not interfere with the signal in normal operation. It also provides excellent surge protection for data lines with its fast response time and high peak power.
