TVS – Diodes – Application Field and Working PrincipleTransient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes are a form of semiconductor protection devices designed to protect sensitive electrical networks from voltages transients, also known as electrical surges or electrostatic discharges (ESD). The SMA5J36CHE3/61 is one such TVS diode, which offers an impressive number of features and capabilities. This article provides an overview of the application field and working principle of the SMA5J36CHE3/61 TVS diode. Application FieldTVS diodes are based on the avalanche breakdown effect of pn- junction diodes. By deliberately increasing the junction voltage, the pn- junction can be made to break down, thus limiting any voltage transient within a very short time. The SMA5J36CHE3/61 is especially designed for protecting electronics devices against overvoltage transients occurring in automotive, communication and industrial systems. It features a working voltage nominal operating voltage range of 3.3 to 36V with a maximum clamping voltage of 36V. It also has a very fast response time, which helps to protect sensitive devices against high-frequency transients and initial transients. Working PrincipleThe working principle behind the SMA5J36CHE3/61 lies in its structural construction. The device consists of two pn- junction diodes connected in series. This forms a three layer (3-layer) device, which is reverse-biased at the breakdown voltage. When the junction reaches the breakdown voltage, all the charge carriers break down and the resulting current is limited to a safe level. The avalanche breakdown voltage of the SMA5J36CHE3/61 is determined by the design of the junction and the breakdown voltage of the diode. This breakdown voltage is usually in the range of 3.3 to 36V, with a maximum breakdown voltage of 36V. Once the junction reaches this breakdown voltage, the voltage across the diode is limited by the provided clamping voltage of 36V. This limits the magnitude and duration of the voltage transient. The response time of the device is also an important factor. The SMA5J36CHE3/61 features a response time of under 0.5µs, allowing it to effectively protect against high-frequency transients. The device also offers a high power dissipation capacity, allowing it to protect against over currents and extreme temperatures with minimal power consumption.
