Motor drivers, controllers, and power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are designed to provide efficient control and power management of motors. The SMA6823MH is an development board-level PMIC based on the NXP Semiconductor SMA6823MH, a highly integrated motor driver with high performance features.
The SMA6823MH is designed for automotive applications such as Automotive SCMS (Soft Clutch System) and power steering operation, mechanical air conditioning operation, providing excellent motor control performance and operation.
The SMA6823MH achieves a significant level of integration with a count of just three external components, including a small package 12V step-down buck converter, an external MOSFET for current shaping control, and an analog temperature sensor to provide accurate temperature feedback.
The SMA6823MH has an integrated multi-level gate driver, which allows for higher efficiency and improved switching performance. Its wide input voltage range allows the PMIC to be operated from a nominal system voltage of 12V, with 16V start-up.
The SMA6823MH also features a wide range of power modes, allowing the user to adjust the motor drive current and frequencies to determine the motor speed and torque, as well as to control the direction of the motor.
The SMA6823MH has three operational modes: speed mode, current mode, and voltage mode. In speed mode, the motor speed is determined by the frequency and ratio of motor current to the motor voltage, while in current mode, the current passing through the motor is measured in Amps, thus the motor speed is determined by the frequency of the current passing through. In voltage mode, the motor speed is determined by the ratio of motor voltage to the motor current.
The SMA6823MH supports pulse-width modulation (PWM) control as well as current and voltage vector control, allowing for smooth and efficient motor operation. In addition, it can be integrated with a variety of peripherals, such as Hall sensors, quadrature encoders, and position sensing.
The SMA6823MH also includes integrated protection features, such as over-temperature, over-current, over-voltage, and short circuit protection. This provides enhanced reliability and robust performance in a wide range of operating temperature conditions.
The SMA6823MH also features a low-noise power down mode to reduce overall device current consumption. Lastly, the SMA6823MH offers a user-programmable clock and a wide range of fault detection and catching capability.
