Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes are electronic components which are used to protect nearby components from damage in circuits, by quickly releasing stored energy in the form of a current surge. The SMCJ16C diode is part of a family of products used in applications where high energy and high voltage surges between 1500W and 6000W must be dissipated.
The SMCJ16C comprises of its contacting framework, a bidirectional epoxy body with a pressed varistor and a double axial PN junction. The product is designed so that its peak pulse power capabilities and power ratings are superior in comparison to other diodes on the market, making it suitable for use in a host of applications.
SMCJ16C devices provide protection for a wide range of devices. They are designed to absorb and dissipate transient energy caused by lightning, power line faults and other sources. Normally, the SMCJ16C will function during high-voltage/high-current events, withstanding a voltage up to 1500W to 6000W and current up to 16A pulse (10/1000 μs waveform).
The working principle of the SMCJ16C utilises a varistor to absorb transient electrical energy from a high voltage or high current surge. The operation of the device works by limiting the voltage across the component to a safe level. The varistor’s nonlinear resistance forces the device to act as a clamp to limit the current and the voltage to a specific limit. This helps to protect the various components in the circuit from damage since the current released from the surge is absorbed by the diode, rather than passing through the component.
As well as circuit protection, the SMCJ16C has a range of other applications including telecoms, mobile phones, medical equipment, office equipment, automotive and consumer electronics and computers. Alternatively, it can be used in parallel with other components for variable voltage clamping, which is beneficial in suppressing overvoltage spikes and surges.
