SMCJ300 is a transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode designed to provide protection to electronic components against voltage transients caused by external source such as load dump, inductive switching or electrostatic discharge. SMCJ300 is a bidirectional device with Breakdown Voltage (BV) rating of 300V and it is capable of absorbing maximum surge current up to 300A.
The rated forward operating voltage (VF) of SMCJ300 is 5.25V. Its peak off-state leakage current (ID) is 30 μA at 6V. It features a non-conventional soft avalanche characteristics in both reverse and forward direction along with low reverse and forward leakage current. It has low power dissipation ratings, up to 0.25 W. This device can also be used for applications with frequency below 1MHz, such as automobile, telecommunications and consumer infrastructures.
The SMCJ300 is widely used in the following applications:
- Automotive systems such as load dump, inductive load switch, and electrostatic discharge protection.
- Consumer equipment such as DVD, LCD, and remote control.
- Industrial power systems such as computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet PC, server, and CCTV.
- Telecommunication system such as cellular phone, DSL, and broadband.
The working principle of SMCJ300 is based on the avalanche breakdown of its junction. This breakdown phenomenon occurs as electrons create sufficient energy in the form of electric field to overcome the effective barriers in its junction, which then releases energy and causes current flow. This breakdown current has a much higher value than the normal currents and this is how the voltage is regulated in the circuit. The higher the voltage, the more avalanche events occur, resulting in higher breakdown. When the overvoltage condition is gone, the diode will automatically restore its normal functioning.
SMCJ300 also includes an avalanche clamping circuit for forward voltage protection. This allows the peak current to be limited to a predetermined safe level, thus protecting the equipment form failure due to overvoltage conditions. The reverse avalanche-clamping circuit, on the other hand, reduces the voltage to a level that is safe for the devices used in the circuit. Both of these processes help in reducing the chances of device failure due to voltage transients.
