SMF13A-TP Application Field and Working Principle

The SMF13A-TP is a surface-mounted, low capacitance, unidirectional Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diode desgined to provide protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD) and transients. SMF13A-TP is ideal for use in system level protection,consumer electronics, computer peripherals, telecommunication, automotive, and industrial electronic applications requiring low capacitance, fast response time and excellent clamping performance.

The SMF13A-TP has a multi-layer TVS design that combines high peak pulse power (EFT/ Pulse Wave) handling capability with very low leakage current. Its planar structure allows for the device to fit into smaller packages and requires less board area compared to other TVS diodes.

Working Principle: The SMF13A-TP is designed to provide a multifunctional protective device. It is capable of protecting against multiple types of electrical surge threats including ESD, EFT, lightning, and other surges. When triggered, the diode will provide a low resistance path for the surge current to flow through, thus limiting the voltage across the protected circuit. This is accomplished by a breakdown/avalanche process within the diode junction which is dependent on the junction temperature.

The device also provides an ESD protection capability that clamps the voltage at the protected device or circuit to an acceptable level. This is accomplished by the devices low dynamic resistance (leakage) characteristic which increases the device temperature and increases the clamping voltage under ESD conditions.

The SMF13A-TP has an operating range from -3.0V to 24V and offers excellent protection against ESD (IEC 61000-4-2), EFT (IEC61000-4-4), and CPD surge pulses (IEC61000-4-5). This device is RoHS compliant and is available in various package types (SMF8, SMA, and SMB), which allow for easy board mounting and user friendly design.
