SMF17A-TP Circuit Protection

Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes have been developed to protect electrical circuit components from overvoltage conditions. TVS diodes are used in many applications, including bipolar junction transistors, diode arrays, amplifiers, and motor vehicle applications. The working principle of the SMF17A-TP is simple. When an overvoltage occurs, its internal switching element (either silicon carbide or gallium nitride) switches on and provides a low voltage path for the overvoltage. The SMF17A-TP can be used in resistance or capacitance applications. In resistance applications it is most useful for preventing overvoltage conditions from occurring. When combined with a capacitor, the diode can be used to help reduce electrical noise in high frequency voltage spikes, such as those that occur in switch-mode power supplies.
