SMF18A is a TVS - diode form the Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. family of transient voltage suppressors, characterized by two diode junctions that are connected in parallel with a resistor. SMF18A offers a two-stage overvoltage protection solution with both temperature and surge capability. These devices are rated for operating 600W peak pulse power (P PPM ) or 20A peak pulse current (I PP ). Their SMA packages offer superior thermal performance and electrical parameters.

In addition to 600W peak power rating, the SMF18A also offers superior transient protection characteristics such as 990V peak pulse voltage rating for clamping, 6.3V to 7.7V series avalanche breakdown voltage range, and 4V average forward voltage drop. The working principle of the SMF18A relies on its diode structure, which is arranged in two series diodes connected in parallel with a transient protection resistor. This configuration allows two separate and independent stages of protection. The first stage is a high-voltage protection diode, designed to act as an ESD protection component, keeping the voltage rise from transient events below the breakdown voltage of the second diode junction. The second stage is an avalanche breakdown diode, designed to protect against any remaining overpressure when the first diode junction is completely saturated. When this stage is activated, the negative transient suppression resistor limits the flow of current through the avalanche diode.

For extreme transient protection and fast response, the SMF18A makes use of an integrated internal protection circuit. This circuit includes an ultra-fast ESD protection diode, a transient voltage suppressor diode, and a reverse polarity protection diode, all connected in parallel with the transient protection resistor. This allows the circuit to withstand fast rising transients, even those with high pulse energies, and provides exceptional levels of protection against dangerous voltage levels during overvoltage events. The SMF18A also offers a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to +130°C.
