Working Principle

SML4746A-E3/5A is a single Zener diode, so it follows the same process to control voltage as other Zener diodes when connected in a circuit. It works on the principle of avalanche breakdown, a phenomenon caused by high electric field strength which causes electrons to move through the depletion region and create electron-hole pairs.

When a forward voltage is applied, a potential barrier appears between the two terminals of the diode, blocking current flow until a critical voltage is exceeded. At this point, the electric field becomes strong enough to cause no free electrons in the depleted region to accelerate towards the anode and create electron-hole pairs. This is the Zener breakdown, and it generates a moderate but constant current, which serves to control the voltage.

When the SML4746A-E3/5A is connected in circuit, it acts as a switch, clamping the voltage at a specific level. If the voltage increases, the diode will conduct more current, compensating for the increase by providing additional current that carries excess charge away.
