Thyristors are an important type of solid state semiconductor device, also known as a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR). They are widely used in a number of practical electronic applications due to their robustness and cost-efficiency. In particular, a major usage of thyristors is in the protection of power electronics, in motor control and in controlling power surges in otherwise vulnerable circuits. The SMP50-62 series of thyristors is specially designed for this purpose, and has been widely adopted in high-reliability applications.
The SMP50-62 series of thyristors are three-terminal devices, featuring an anode, a cathode and a gate terminal. In normal operation, the gate terminal remains floating. When the anode voltage rises above a specific threshold level, a ‘trigger current’ must be applied to the gate in order for the device to switch ‘on’ and become conducting. The device then remains in a highly-conducting state so long as the gate current is kept flowing - this is known as ‘latching’, and provides the main advantage of using thyristors. Other advantages include low noise levels and immunity to transient signals.
The SMP50-62 series of thyristors is specifically designed for use as surge protection devices in power applications. As such, they can be classified as protective thyristors (PTS), and are optimized for use in rectifiers and converter circuits, as well as low-losses applications. The devices also feature a highly robust construction, and are capable of withstanding the high current pulses and temperature rises typical of such applications. The thyristors are rated for up to 5kV, and have a semiconductor chip encapsulated in a round metal case.
The working principle of the SMP50-62 series of thyristors is as follows. The device operates in the ‘reverse blocking’ mode, meaning that current can only flow from the anode to the cathode. When a voltage is applied across the anode and cathode, a trigger current must be applied to the gate in order for the thyristor to ‘turn on’. The thyristor then switches into a highly conducting state, so long as the appropriately level of current remains flowing through the gate. Switching off the thyristor is simply a matter of reducing the gate current.
In summary, the SMP50-62 series of thyristors are specially designed for use in a range of high-reliability power applications where surge protection is essential. The devices offer the advantages of low noise levels, immunity to transient signals, and highly robust construction. Furthermore, they are rated for up to 5kV, and operate on the reverse blocking principle. For these reasons, the SMP50-62 series of thyristors have become widespread in power electronics, motor control and surge protection devices.
