Alarms, Buzzers, and Sirens

Sensitron Magnetic Transducer, or SMT-12, is an electronic device that transforms electrical signals into audible sound signals and are commonly used in alarms, bells, buzzers, and sirens. As the name implies, an SMT-12 device is capable of producing a magnetic field around an electromagnet or a permanent magnet to oscillate at an audible frequency. This oscillation can then be detected by sensors placed in close proximity to the SMT-12 device.

Application Field

The SMT-12 application field varies due to its versatility in terms of electronic devices it can control. It is mostly used in combination with alarms, buzzers, and sirens as a part of the security and safety systems to warn, report or generate an emergency signal. Working Principle

The working principle of the SMT-12 is based on the magnetoelectric conversion. An electromagnet is placed inside the device which is driven by a voltage or current. This magnetic field flux is proportional to the current passing through the electromagnet wires. In its basic form, the device comprises of a coil, a ferromagnetic core and an electret condenser, as shown below.

When the current is switched on, the current in the magnet suspension winding generates a magnetic field which is converted into an electrical field by the mechanoelectrical transducer (MET). As a result, an electrical potential is applied to the electret condenser. The electrical potential causes the condenser to vibrate at a frequency in range of 18kHz - 21kHz. This vibration of the condenser is then amplified and converted into an audible sound by a speaker.

The level of the sound produced by the SMT-12 can be controlled by adjusting the power of the current passing through the coil. By controlling the intensity of the magnetic field, the strength of the vibration can be adjusted and thus produces sound with different levels of loudness.

Apart from the current, the frequency of the sound and its radiation pattern can be controlled by adjusting the magnet mounting shape, size, and material composition. By varying the above parameters, different characteristics in the sound waves can be produced such as reducing noises from the neighbouring environment and broadening sound frequency in order to reach a wider range.
