The SN65ALS1176P is a Bidirectional Transition-Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS) ® Cable Equalizer. It is mainly used within the field of interface – Drivers, Receivers, Transceivers, so both applications and the working principle will be discussed below.

Applications

The SN65ALS1176P is designed specifically to address the growing challenge of complex cable driving with High-Definition(HD) equipment designs. It provides an ideal solution for projects that require excellent signal quality for HDTV, which has stringent requirements for signal integrity. It can also be used in situations where signals need to be transmitted over long cable lengths without losing quality, such as in industrial communication systems.

The equalizer can be used in a variety of applications including in video systems, computers, digital video recorders (DVRs), digital television (DTV), and digital video interfaces (DVI). It can also be used in conjunction with display controllers and video source or destination devices such as a television, monitor, projector. Finally,the SN65ALS1176P is also useful for digital interconnections such as optical and digital audio, networking and telecommunication, automotive and avionics, and test and measurement.

Work Principle

The SN65ALS1176P is a Zero Delay Adaptive Equalization Circuitry. This circuitry is designed to counteract the effect of channel attenuation and maximize signal integrity at high data rates over long cables. It works by monitoring the Eye Mask of the incoming signal, which is the region of signal values that are acceptable for the quality of the signal. As the attenuation of the signal increases, the equalizer can automatically adjust itself to maintain the signal within the eye mask. This helps ensure that data is received correctly, particularly at the highest data rates.

The SN65ALS1176P has two signal inputs that are used to sense a source to receive signal. The signal processor on the chip monitors the two inputs and intelligently increases signal gain and signal quality over long cables. The equalizer also employs equalizing filters which reduce attenuation across all frequency ranges. This ensures that data is reliably transmitted and received over long cable runs.

The SN65ALS1176P is capable of providing gain up to 0dB, with a maximum signal range of up to 20dB, depending on the source signal characteristics. This allows the equalizer to ensure that the signal remains within the eye mask, across different cable lengths and data rates.
