The SN65HVD1471DGK is a fully integrated single-chip transceiver designed to allow data exchange between two controllers on the CAN bus. Included on-chip are the CAN transceiver, the CAN protocol controller, and the CAN advanced control registers. Working Principle

The SN65HVD1471DGK is designed to allow transfer of differential messages over a single twisted pair used in the following formats: high speed, low speed, and high speed auto-baud. The transmission speed can be selected via the Pin3; a high speed connection is selected if Pin3 is not connected to ground while a low speed connection is selected if Pin3 is connected to ground. The device supports 11-bit standard and 29-bit extended identifiers. The bit-rates of the communication can be set or programmed with the help of the bit-timers inside the chip.

To ensure efficient communication on a CAN bus, every node must adhere to the Bit Control System. This system is based on the idea that a node can only send a message when it is given the bit – typically by its predecessor in the bus line. The SN65HVD1471DGK chip utilizes this concept as it gives the controller access to three advanced control registers known as CONFIGn, CMDn, and STAn. With these, the CAN transceiver can condition the CAN lines to have the correct voltage levels required for correct communication messages.

During the transmission phase of a frame, the SN65HVD1471DGK neglects the parity bit and computes the arbitrary bits from the received frame ID. It then compares the ID with the one that is configured with the help of the CONTROL1 register. The CONTROL1 register consists of 11 fields, each containing a single bit-time. When the field bits correspond to the received ID bits, the node sends out the message. The output is differential, with the voltage on one of the line depending on the signal transmitted.

In the reception phase of a frame, the SN65HVD1471DGK filters out the signal noise by first ignoring the pulses on the BUS lines that have a shorter bit-time than the one that is configured with the CONTROL1 register. It then listens to the data frames on the BUS line and stores the frames into an internal buffer that is accessible by the microcontroller.

The SN65HVD1471DGK also has an integrated data and overrun error detector. The data error detector detects errors in the data frames by comparing the CRC5 checksum of the received data with the one that it was supposed to be. If both match, the received frame is valid and the data is stored into the buffer. The OVERRUN error detector monitors the acknowledge signals from the other nodes in the CAN bus and checks if the acknowledge signal was received in time.
