1. Describe
The SN65HVD3082EP is a half-duplex transceiver designed for RS-485 data bus networks. They are powered by 5V and are fully TIA/EIA-485A compliant. By controlling the transition time, these devices are suitable for transmitting data over long twisted pair cables. The SN65HVD3082E and SN75HVD3082E are optimized for signaling rates up to 200 kbps. The SN65HVD3085E is suitable for data transfer up to 1 Mbps, while the SN65HVD3088E is suitable for applications requiring signaling rates up to 20 Mbps. These devices are designed to operate at very low supply current, typically 0.3 mA, excluding the load. When in inactive shutdown mode, supply current drops to a few nanoamps, making these devices ideal for power-sensitive applications. The wide common-mode range and high ESD protection level of these devices make them suitable for demanding applications such as electricity meter networks, electrical inverters, status and command signals on telecommunications racks, as well as cable chassis interconnects and industrial automation networks, where noise tolerance is essential. These devices meet the industry standard footprint of the SN75176 device. A power-on reset circuit keeps the output in a high-impedance state until the supply voltage stabilizes. A thermal shutdown feature protects the device from system fault conditions. The SN75HVD3082E operates from 0°C to 70°C and the SN65HVD308xE operates from –40°C to 85°C. The D package version of the SN65HVD3082E features an operating temperature range of –40°C to 105°C.

6. Function description
The SN65HVD3082EP provides internal biasing of receiver input thresholds for open-circuit, bus-idle, or short-circuit fault protection conditions. It has a typical hysteresis of 30 mV for improved noise immunity. Internal ESD Protection Circuitry Protects Transceiver Bus Terminals From ±15kV Human Body Model (HBM) electrostatic discharge. The device protects itself from damage due to overheating conditions by using Thermal shutdown function. Thermal shutdown is entered at 165°C (nominal) and causes the device to enter a low power state with a high impedance output.
7. Application Information
The SN65HVD3082EP devices are half-duplex RS-485 transceivers typically used for asynchronous data transmission. Driver and receiver enable pins allow configuration of different modes of operation. Using separate enable lines provides the most flexible control as it allows the driver and receiver Open and close individually. Although this configuration requires two control lines, it allows selective listening Bus traffic, whether or not the driver is transferring data. Combining the enable signals simplifies interfacing with the controller by forming a single directional control signal. In this configuration, the transceiver operates as a driver when the direction control line is high and operates as a receiver When the direction control line is low.
