SN65HVD52DR Application Field and Working Principle

The SN65HVD52DR from Texas Instruments is a low-power differential bus transceiver designed for applications which require the highest noise immunity, robustness and bit rates in harsh environments. It is capable of operating from a single 3.3V power supply, and is fully compatible with RS-485, RS-422, and Ethernet standards providing a fully integrated physical layer device for balanced bus communication. The SN65HVD52DR can be used to interface devices such as microcontrollers, PCs, digital servo amplifiers, as well as analog and digital signal processors in electrically-noisy environments, hot and cold temperatures and extended vibration environments.

Working Principle

The SN65HVD52DR is a differential bus transceiver which provides full duplex communications, allowing data transmission between two bus devices using differential signal pairs. The transceiver contains two 1/2 drivers and two 1/2 receivers. The drivers are able to transmit data up to 25 Mbps at a maximum distance of 4200 ft. The two drivers are controlled by the host microcontroller. The receiver inputs are protected against overvoltage and the outputs are protected against undervoltage.

The driver circuitry is specifically designed to allow it to interpret voltage swing levels on the host interface to generate the correct signal on the differential line pair. The receiver input is designed to rapidly detect signal transitions down to 0.05 volts and incorporates error free wave shape sensing and generation circuitry to reduce the effects of interference. The receiver output is complimentary, allowing for switching of polarity for connection to differential buses that use opposite polarization.

The SN65HVD52DR also contains additional features for improved system reliability such as 2-Wire Local Enable Circuitry or 3-Wire Remote Enable Circuitry and Fail-Safe Feature if the control connection is lost which keeps the receivers in their default OFF state.
