The SN65LBC170DWR is a wide bus transceiver designed for use in the DE-9(DB-9)/RS-232C standard interface. It is designed for high speed data communication applications using low voltage logic on a full-duplex balanced line. With its high speed capabilities, the SN65LBC170DWR is ideal for use in high speed data communication systems such as local area networks (LANs) and serial communication links. Applications for the SN65LBC170DWR include computer peripherals and other networked systems such as those found in cellular phone base stations, industrial control and automation systems.
The SN65LBC170DWR is a fast bi-directional transceiver which provides a full-duplex data path between the A and B ports which operate with an open drain both directions. This allows the signal line to be bidirectionally AC coupled and requires no external pull-up, pull-down resistors or termination networks. The SN65LBC170DWR has three distinct operating modes: transmit mode, receive mode, and idle mode. In the transmit mode, the A input is driven into the B output, and vice versa, in the receive mode. When in idle mode, the bidirectional data path is disabled, and both A and B ports are held in a high impedance state.
The SN65LBC170DWR operates on a single +5V power supply and includes an internal potentiometer (connection to an external potentiometer may also be used) to adjust the receiver sensitivity. The receiver detection threshold is adjustable, allowing it to accept data streams at different baud rates. The device is capable of operating over a wide-voltage range (1.65V to 5.5V) and temperature range (-40°C to +1O5°C). It has been designed to meet the requirements of UL 935 and has a maximum data rate of 250 kb/sec.
The SN65LBC170DWR features an advanced power saving design that allows it to function more efficiently in low-power applications. The device has two power saving modes, the Receiver Idle Mode and the Transceiver Idle Mode. When in Receiver Idle Mode, the receiver of the SN65LBC170DWR will be automatically shut off after a pre-defined time period if no data is detected on the communication line. When in Transceiver Idle Mode, the transmitter of the SN65LBC170DWR will shut off after a pre-defined time period if no data is requested on the communication line.
The SN65LBC170DWR also has a reset input pin which allows the device to reset to the default state of all outputs high-impedance. The reset function can be used to protect other devices connected to the SN65LBC170DWR in the event of unexpected power interruptions or to switch between different transceiver operating modes. The reset pin can be connected to a manual reset push button or an automatic reset circuit.
The SN65LBC170DWR is an ideal candidate for use in a variety of serial communication applications. It is designed for fast transmission of data across communication lines and provides an efficient power saving design for low-power applications. It is also designed to meet the requirements of UL 935 for data communication systems.
