The SN74ACT74DRE4 is a type of Flip Flop with a particular set of features, whose principal application field and corresponding features are discussed in this document. Application Field
The SN74ACT74DRE4 is a Dual D Flip Flop that can be used in multiple applications, but some of its most relevant ones are in circuits which provide a wide range of Clock and Data input strengths, since increasing the input resistance of a circuit allows it to have a greater noise immunity capacity. Features
The SN74ACT74DRE4 is an FET based dual D Flip Flop with a propagation delay of 11.5ns. It has differential buffered inputs, while the outputs consist of single-ended open drain connections. It is built around the logic circuit 73S244, and has two separate outputs, allowing the operation of each part independently. This Flip Flop’s main features include Low Power Dissipation (7mW in High-Impedance State), and high data transfer rates. Additionally, its outputs can withstand static discharges up to 2KV.
Working Principle
The SN74ACT74DRE4 logic circuit is based on a FET technology, which is connected in such a way that it is able to keep the latch information stable, regardless of the input conditions at a given instant of time. It is composed of two separable single D Flip Flops. Each of them contains two NAND gates that form the latch through feedback from the output to one of the inputs of each NAND gate, making it easier for them to maintain the same output in different stages of operation. The other two inputs of said NAND gates are the Data (D) inputs, used to input the information that will be stored in the latch. Lastly, the Clock (CLK) input, is used to decide when input data should be loaded into the latch.
The operation of the flip flop follows a few simple steps, always starting in the no operation state. The first step is the data input. This is done by applying the D inputs with either a logic high (1) or a logic low (0) when the CLK is low. Once the CLK signal is data strobed, the input data will be stored in the flip flop. The stored data will then remain in the outputs until the CLK signal changes, allowing the input data to change, thus modifying the output data. When the CLK signal is in it’s high state, the inputs of the latch will be disabled and the stored data will remain in the latch until the next CLK signal or reset. This process allows the flip flop to maintain a steady digital output in successive intervals of time.
