Logic - Gates and Inverters

The SN74ACT86N is an advanced high-speed quadruple 2-input EXCLUSIVE OR gate, a monolithic complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit constructed with N- and P-channel enhancement mode transistors. The logic gates are designed to provide the systems designer with direct implementation of the 4-way Exclusive-OR function and its complementary output with increased noise immunity and minimal interface requirements. It is ideal for use in power-sensitive applications and provides low power dissipation of 2.2 m W/gate. In addition, the SN74ACT86N provides low offset time delay and low power Schottky TTL logic levels.

The SN74ACT86N has an internal voltage-feedback structure and its power-down feature allow it to be used in either 5- or 3-volt applications. Its wide supply voltage range allows operation up to 6 V with power supply range of 4.5 V to 7 V. It has the capability to operate at high input and output voltage levels while maintaining low power dissipation.

Application Fields

The SN74ACT86N can be used in various applications such as in telecommunications, medical diagnostics, industrial control systems, instrumentation, digital watches, meters and displays, network routers, networking equipment, and other embedded developments. Additionally, it can be used in digital signal processing, logic level converters, digital controls and scramblers, encryption/decryption circuits, memory/access control systems, digital signal multiplexers and transceivers, and many other electronic applications.

Its power down feature allows it to be used in wide variety of applications in which the load is constantly changing. This is because it ensures minimum power consumption. Furthermore, it has the capability to operate at high input and output voltage levels, making it ideal for power-sensitive applications. It is also very suitable for applications in which the logic gate is exposed to high levels of noise.

Working Principle

The SN74ACT86N consists of four independent two-input EXCLUSIVE OR gates. Each gate is composed of two N-channel enhancement-mode transistors and two P-channel enhancement-mode transistors connected in the EXCLUSIVE OR configuration. The outputs of the device are complementary. That is, they are either both high or both low, dependent on the input signals. The logic state of the output is dependent on the logic states of both the inputs.

The EXCLUSIVE OR gate has a “true” output only when one, and only one, of its two inputs are high. If both the inputs are low, or if both the inputs are high, then the output is low. This is the exclusive OR logic and is also known as the symbol XOR. This logic is often used for arithmetic and logic operations, for example for arithmetic and logic comparisons.

The SN74ACT86N operates over a wide input voltage range. Its quiescent power supply current is low, making it ideal for applications where power dissipation is a concern. Furthermore, its immunity to noise makes it suitable for applications where it may be exposed to levels of noise. Lastly, its power down feature allows it to be used in various applications, such as in industrial control systems, in which the load is constantly changing.
