The SN74AHC595NSRG4 is a type of Logic Shift Register, a 8 bit Serial In – Parallel Out (SIPO) shift register. This specific chip is manufactured by Texas Instruments, and belongs to their very successful and well-known Standard Logic (SN54/74LVC) Logic Family.

SN74AHC595NSRG4 is capable of amplifying transforms signal levels up to 5V from the lower one of 3.3V, making it useful for the interfacing of the two types of voltage devices. It is also suitable for dealing with higher voltage devices as it can handle over 20V minimal input voltage and to 35V maximum. This makes it ideal for applications such as vending machine output and general purpose logic.

This shift register obtains its input from a serial data pin (DS). The clock signal enables the shifting from the serial input data to the parallel outputs (Q7 to Q0) using its clock (SHCP) pin. This is achieved by the use of Flip-Flops, with each output Flip-Flop connected to a unique data pin.

When the clock signal triggers the shift register, it moves the data one bit, placing it into the first Flip-Flop serially. This data, in turn, is updated in the Flip-Flop, and as it moves toward the parallel output of the shift register. Therefore, the falling signal of the clock input passes the data at the serial input to the first Flip-Flop.

SN74AHC595NSRG4 can be configured to act as a universal shift register. This will allow the chip to receive and store a certain number of bits of data that is then supplied to the output pins. It can also be configured as full-adder, a halfadder and hybrid logic.

The chip is set to either receive data in serial format for storing in 8 Flip-Flops, or receive data in parallel format for shifting outwards. The serial mode is based on clocking in the complete set of 8 bits of data from the serial input and then latching it into the register, while the parallel mode is triggered by the latch enable (LE) signal.

The device is capable of interfacing with almost all variety of Logic, and that includes TTL, 5V logic, 3.3V logic levels and CMOS. Both active low and active high logic are supported, however, it only supports an asynchronous reset, which is considered a downside since not many applications require this feature.

Another important feature is that the latch enable (LE) signal is also able to switch the direction of data flow. In this circumstance, the shift register acts as a bidirectional data bus, having the capability to both shift in data, and shift out data. This is common for applications where more than two digital devices need to be connected, such as memory controllers, wireless data links, diagnostic equipments and multi-processor systems.
