The SN74ALS323N is a member of the Texas Instruments (TI) advanced logic series, specifically its logic - Shift Registers family. It is a wide two-level cascading register which uses a three-bit field for the clock strobe, enabling the device to accept inputs from either the internal clock or an external input signal. The SN74ALS323N is capable of providing low-cost 2-level cascading, shift-left/shift-right and serial/parallel data exchange operations. It is also able to output multiple signals to a common line for switching operations.
The SN74ALS323N is mainly utilized in applications that require the storage and manipulation of digital data, such as in display devices, video amplifiers, digital musical synthesizers and processing systems. And, the device offers enhancements such as very low-power consumption, fast data transmission and improved switch noise immunity.
The SN74ALS323N has a direct coupling between data inputs, referred to as a ‘complementary characteristic’, meaning that a single data voltage is able to be shifted in either direction. Its tri-state data outputs provide the flexibility and isolation to allow the SN74ALS323N to chain multiple devices together if more than eight bits of data is needed. When the device is shifted, any data that is lost from the output of one device is automatically recovered from the input of the next device.
The SN74ALS323N incorporates a two-level clocked register structure, with three-bit clock select fields. Each of the three-bit fields can enable an action event based on the state of the logic high and low, referred to as the set and reset. There are four basic flip-flop combinations available, each which are designed to enable the SN74ALS323N to switch between high and low and operate as a general-purpose register. They are as follows; ‘Set/Reset/Clk’, ‘Clk/Set/Reset’, ‘Reset/Clk/Set’ and ‘Clk/Reset/Set’ .
The SN74ALS323N operates with two levels of logic and includes two-level latches and two-level sequential logic options. These two-level latches and two-level sequential logic capabilities enable the operations of shift left/right, serial and parallel data exchange, as well as data transfer and storage. When used with the above-mentioned timing fields, the SN74ALS323N can easily extend the capability of the sequential logic and storage operations.
When the device is enabled, a 3.3V logic output is created, while an output of 0V is generated whenever it is disabled. To ensure the device is reliable and operates correctly, the power supply voltage should be between 3.3V and 6V, while the storage temperature can range between -40℃ to 85℃.
Additionally, the SN74ALS323N has an input voltage range from 0V to 6V. But, whenever an external signal is used as an input to the device, it must be within 3.2V and 0V range, otherwise it may cause damage to the device. Thus, it is recommended that any external input signal should be filtered or be followed by a voltage regulator.
