Logic – Gates and Inverters
An inverter is comprised of a logic gate with three or more inputs, that respond to the logic level on the inputs to generate a single output. Inverters are used to convert a signal that has one logic level in order to flip its value. The SN74HC10DE4 is a high-performance industrial grade inverter with a wide range of applications.

The SN74HC10DE4 is a general-purpose logic inverter. It has a standard open collector TTL logic input and a logic transistor output, which means it can be used in a wide range of applications. These include:
- Decoding
- Digital signal processing
- Logic indicating
- Logic control
- I/O control
- Signal switching
The SN74HC10DE4 can also be used in a variety of industrial automation applications such as motion control, vision systems, robotics and process control.
Working Principle of SN74HC10DE4
At the basic level, an inverter is a switch – its output is determined by whether its input is in the high or low state. It takes one input, which is the signal to be inverted, and the output is a copy of the input but with the opposite logic level. In the SN74HC10DE4, the logic level of the input is determined by the voltage level – a high voltage level indicates a logic ‘1’ and a low voltage level indicates a logic ‘0’.
The SN74HC10DE4 is built with transistors and resistors connected in a way that makes the output switch opposite to the input. When the input voltage is high, the output voltage is pulled low through the transistors, and when the input is low, the output transistor is open and the output voltage is pulled high. Thus the output voltage is opposite to the input voltage, inverting its logic level.
Advantages of SN74HC10DE4
The SN74HC10DE4 has several advantages over other inverters, including:
- High switching speed – the SN74HC10DE4 can switch up to 40 MHz, allowing it to be used in high-speed applications
- High noise immunity – the SN74HC10DE4 has a low-noise design and is immune to noise frequencies in the range of 30 µW to 30 MHz
- Wide temperature range – the device is rated to operate at temperatures between -55 to 125 ºC
- High output current capability – the device can handle output currents of up to 70 mA, which allows it to be used in high-power applications
The SN74HC10DE4 is a versatile logic inverter with a wide range of applications. It is designed to be rugged and reliable, with a high switching speed and wide temperature range, making it a suitable choice for many industrial, automation, and communications applications.
