Logic gates are components of digital electronics that allow for decision making processes, combining or modifying input signals in order to execute desired output decisions. Inverters primarily act as signal modifiers, taking in input signals and outputting their opposite value, or inverted value. SN74HCT02PW is a type of logic gate, more specifically a dual-inverting gate, as it contains two separate inverting channels that operate independently. This device is suitable for all operating systems up to 20V. In this regard, SN74HCT02PW often found application in digital, mixed signal and memory circuit designs where dependable, high-speed performance is crucial.

SN74HCT02PW dual-inverting logic gate typically composed of two n-channel MOSFETs, with sources connected together to common ground. The drain of each MOSFET acts as the output, while the gate of each MOSFET is pulled to a positive voltage to the logic-low level, and has an inverse relationship with their respective gates. That is, when a low voltage is applied to one of the gates, the other is forced to the high voltage level; and vice versa. The device also has two power leads, a positive voltage lead (VCC) and a ground lead (GND).

The two inputs of SN74HCT02PW, designated A and B, can be either logic-high or logic-low. If both inputs A and B are logic-low, both outputs Y and Z will be logic-high, making it an open-collector logic gate since both outputs are sinking no current. When either input A or B is logic-high, one of the outputs, specifically output Z, will be logic-low (or low-level output) while Y will be logic-high (high-level output). Therefore, the SN74HCT02PW can be used to produce an inverted output from a single inverted input. This type of operation is often referred as “NOT of an input”.

In addition to power and inputs, the SN74HCT02PW has two resistors connected between its input and output terminals, providing extra noise immunity. These two resistors are normally selected depending on the application’s noise environment and the allowable voltage drop of the logic gate, which can be tuned on-the-fly via the potentiometer.
