Shift registers are digital circuits that can shift their inputs to the right or left based on the values of clock signals provided to them. They act as an auxiliary memory unit in various digital devices, as they are capable of storing data in them, regardless of whether the power supply is on or not. SN74LS595N is a type of shift register that is based on the logic integrated circuit of series 74LS. It is a 8-bit serial-in/parallel-out (SIPO) type shift register, designed with a data latch and 8 output lines. It is capable of transmitting data from one group of registers to another group of registers, within the same device, or from one device to another device.

SN74LS595N consists of 8-stage parallel register and a phase-selectable data latch. The shift register clock is used to shift data and to control the state of the phase-selectable latch. With the help of such logic circuit, the clock input can be synchronized with other ICs. It is operated by positive edge triggered clock. The initial and ripple clock inputs accept positive going transition signals and Ignoring negative going transitions. When the clock pulse goes up, the data present at the input terminal is shifted through the shift register and appears on the output lines one bit at a time. It has an internal feedback path to complete the shift operation.

It has two types of outputs: standard and open-collector outputs. The standard outputs have active pull-up transistors. By connecting these internal pull-up transistors to the I/O supply pin, the output can be kept at ‘0’ or ‘1’ until updated by the next valid input. The open-collector outputs have pull-up resistors. They need an external pull-up resistor for buffering the output.

SN74LS595N shift register is majorly used in data communication circuits, LCD display systems and in other computer systems. The circuit is also used in making digital counters, time-delays circuits, serial-to-parallel converters, memories, etc. It works very well with clock signals, allowing users to program the speed at which data is transferred.
