The SN74LS640NSR is a Logical-Buffer, Driver, Receiver and Transceiver integrated circuit (IC) used in many electronic applications. It is one of the most common ICs used in digital devices. It is designed to provide reliable, functional and cost-effective signal processing in a wide variety of digital systems.

SN74LS640NSR is a Dual-Input Non-Inverting Buffers & Drivers IC, also known as a Logic Gate IC. It is used to control and store digital data for logic functions such as logic gates, flip-flops, counters, multiplexers and so on. It is implemented in a 14-pin Dual In-line Package (DIP) outline.

The SN74LS640NSR application field includes: analog to digital (A/D) and digital to analog (D/A) signal conversion, multi-stage logic, multiplexers, clock drivers, oscillator circuits, logic gates and level detectors, shift registers and memory circuits.

The SN74LS640NSR consists of four independent non-inverting buffers or drivers. It has two address inputs (A0, A1), and two active-low enable inputs, allowing up to 4 distinct sources of control. Each buffer has single-input and output buffers, working together with the two address inputs and the enable inputs, in order to enable four discrete switching patterns for each of the two data inputs. Each buffer features full Power Output Capability, so as to enable high-drive and low-impedance functions, which are important for fast digital systems.

The SN74LS640NSR operating principles are based on the Schmitt-trigger design. It contains four Schmitt-trigger stages, each of which works as a buffer, so the SN74LS640NSR can drive four different output signals. The inputs of the Schmitt-triggers are related to the addressed input (A0 and A1) as well as the enable inputs (EN). When the enable and address inputs are at logic high, the respective buffer gets activated and outputs the logic signal that was present at its input. When the enable inputs go to logic low, the respective buffer is disabled, and the corresponding output is not driven.

The SN74LS640NSR can also be used as a One-Shot circuit, or "timer IC", since it contains an internal latch circuit, allowing an output signal to remain in an active state for predetermined amounts of time. This circuit, in combination with the Schmitt-triggers and the enable and address inputs, can provide pulse widths, as well as timed delays.

In terms of power supply, the SN74LS640NSR requires dual power supplies: a positive and negative 5V supply, so as to ensure noise-free operation. It operates between -40° and 85° C temperature range and it can tolerate up to + 50mA/-50mA of input/output current.

The SN74LS640NSR is a very versatile, reliable and cost-effective logic circuit and it is used in many digital applications. It can be used to drive single-channel and multi-channel logic machines, as well as to build complex circuits that require both logic and pulse width timing functions.
